Victor Purple-Label Records
1909-1920

Victor introduced its Purple Label line in 1910 in a single-sided format. Both ten and twelve-inch discs were made and they were priced between the Black and Red Seal lines. Its field was somewhat Vaudeville-oriented but other content appeared when deemed too exclusive for the Black Label. This is also why they, like Red Seals, were only one-sided.

Harry Lauder, the established Scottish comedian, recorded many of the first Purple Label discs. They sold so well and he continued to make them so often it somewhat became his personal label. Coming across one today will likely feature his name but a few other artists sometimes appear like Victor Herbert and Lucy Isabelle Marsh. Most were recorded in the first few years of the 1910s while new issues quickly slowed by the end of the decade. Like the Red Seals, their one-sided nature fell out of favor in the market as double-discs became common. Unlike the Reds though, the line was discontinued in the new decade and its contents were moved to the double-sided Blue Label.
