Victor 10-Inch Double-Sided Acoustical Records
1908-1925

This page covers the 18000 series (actually a continuation of the 16000s) from 18000 to 18999 with issue dates ranging from 1916 to 1923. Earlier and later issues can be found on other pages. World War I took a heavy toll on Victor when the United States joined the conflict in 1917. A large majority of the company's factories and production shifted to manufacturing equipment for the war effort. In the facilities that were left, shortages in both materials and experienced labor (as men volunteered or were drafted) affected record quality greatly. Prices had to be increased to 85¢ from 1918 until 1922, when it was lowered again to 75¢. Sales suffered too. The dance craze continued, but new bands like Joseph C. Smith's Orchestra replaced the more-dated sound of the military bands. Jazz made its first appearance on record in 1917 with the wildly popular Original Dixieland Jazz Band. This new music and the many other bands that played it quickly came to dominate the scene for the next few years until 1921 or so, writing the first chapter in Jazz history known as the "Dixieland Era". Alongside it came tamer styles of related dance music and Fox Trots with performers like Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra, The Benson Orchestra of Chicago and The All Star Trio. Patriotic songs were popular during the war years and the old studio musicians like Billy Murray and Arthur Fields still recorded often. However others styles of music dropped off the cliff in popularity like Military Marches while Minstrelsy became totally passé and too offensive to most to remain in the market.
