Edison Diamond Discs
1912-1929

This page covers the 50000 series from 51000 to 51999 with issue dates ranging from 1922 to 1927. Earlier issues can be found on another page. The 50000 series was the popular music and performance tier. It had the lowest price starting at $1.00 in 1912, increasing slightly over the years, and was the best-selling of the tiers.

Diamond Discs of this era enjoyed their best surface quality as well as performance talent. Ones in good condition today can be the best-sounding of any acoustically-recorded discs up until electrical recording was introduced to the public-at-large by other companies in 1925. Thomas Edison, who had taken a central role in A&R the previous decade, had pretty much stepped aside by 1924 and a great deal of hot and popular music was making it onto the records. However, he resisted electrical recording until 1927, once again relying on his bad hearing and judging issues by other labels and experiments in his own laboratory as too distorted.
