Edison Diamond Discs
1912-1929

Thomas A. Edison, the inventor of the phonograph in 1877, had been at the forefront of the recording industry since its birth in 1889. However, for years he and his company resisted the manufacture of disc records. After all, the cylinder was his baby and he claimed the sound was superior. Arguments can go both ways. However, popularity of discs overtook cylinders when the double-sided record was introduced in 1908. After a few years of longer four-minutes cylinders, called the Amberol, introduced by Edison failed to close the gap he relented and went to work researching the best disc record. What he came up with was radically different than other discs on the market. The Edison Diamond Disc was recorded vertically, meaning the vibration of the needle went up-and-down (hill-and-dale) instead of side-to-side (lateral). They played at 80 RPM instead of 78 RPM. The discs were not made of shellac but of a powder blank core with lacquered surfaces. They weighed about a pound and were a quarter-inch thick. They had to be played with a diamond stylus, not a steel one. Such a make-up made them incompatible with other phonograph companies on the market, which were moving the other way towards standarization. You had to buy an Edison phonograph to play an Edison record. And you couldn't play records from other companies on an Edison either. The records would be damaged either way. They even didn't have A or B sides, they had R and L sides. Most of this eventually doomed the Edison Diamond Disc but for a time they sold well and were superior in sound. By the late twenties standardization, electrical recording, Edison's personal dislike of many popular artists (jazz, he was just shy of the Civil War generation after all) and the coming Depression brought this format and the company itself to an end. A brief experiment with LP records in 1926 and a new format standardized to the other companies in 1929 were too little too late.

This page covers the early 50000 series from 50001 to 50999 with issue dates ranging from 1912 to 1922. The same series continues from 51000 to 52651 (1929) on other pages. The 50000 series was the popular music and performance tier. It had the lowest price starting at $1.00, increasing slightly over the years, and was the best-selling of the tiers. Labels were embossed onto the record itself and are hard to read if worn. This was done in effort to avoid seeking permission from Victor to use its patent on pressed-in paper labels. In 1921, the switch was finally made to paper. Even then, they were attached with simple glue and can easily come off if one is not careful. Other problems with the Diamond Discs of this period include a decrease in surface quality when World War I broke out and the U.S. embargoed carbolic acid from Germany starting in 1914. Synthetic production of it didn't measure up and more surface noise and quicker wear resulted. If the disc is un-level in spots, the stylus also has a hard time staying in the groove. With the sound on the bottom of the vertically-cut grooves, a bouncing stylus leaves contact completely in that split-second and can yield quite distracting results. Quality improved around 1921 with the end of the embargoes and a recession that actually allowed to factory to slow down from a production rush and apply better materials with more time to do it.

Artists were not identified on the label until 1915. Thomas Edison wanted to promote the songs and technical superiority of recording over celebrity but the market's desire from the latter eventually won. He personally oversaw A&R during this period, dismissing Victor Herbert from the position in 1911 shortly before Diamond Disc production began. Being hard-of-hearing and nearly-of the Civil War generation, his selections were largely out-of-tune with the musical landscape and tastes of the public as the Jazz Age came into being. He even compared jazz to the "agonizing cries of a dying mule" and said it sounded the same backwards as forwards. Refer to #50609-R below, he might be right. His preference was for simpler and older melodies. Nonetheless, some popular tunes did make it past him onto Diamond Discs and that trend picked up into the 1920s as he aged and yielded more control to others.
