Columbia 10-Inch Double-Sided Acoustical Records
1908-1925

Columbia's introduction of the double-sided record in 1908 forced a reluctant Victor to follow a week later. In order to quickly bulk up the catalog, many of the early issues were doubled-up re-releases of single-sided discs from years previous. Victor did the same. This bold move foreshadowed Columbia's rise to par with its great rival in the 1910s.

That decade saw better talent being signed, such as Bert Williams, Al Jolson, Fanny Brice and Nora Bayes. By the late 1910s when the Jazz Age began, Columbia was able to sign its equal share of such talent. Victor had the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, Columbia had Wilbur Sweatman's Original Jazz Band. Victor had Paul Whiteman, Columbia had Ted Lewis. Also, Columbia actually did a slightly better job in getting a number of really honest-to-goodness jazz/blues artists on record like Fletcher Henderson, Edith Wilson, Johnny Dunn, and Bessie Smith.

The fidelity of Columbia's records also improved and matched Victor's in this time period. In some cases, depending on individual taste, it was better. Sometimes more bass is present but rumble can be a problem, especially on modern turntables. The laminated nature of the records may also have a unique and positive effect.

Unlike Victor though, Columbia's label for their popular series changed in color and design several times. A black label gave way to blue and gold, which was briefly replaced by a flag design on bronze before returning to black in 1925. These changes can be seen below.
